Description
The Intelligent Cities Challenge in collaboration with Derry City and Strabane District Council, Donegal County Council, Donegal Digital and ERNACT are working together to deliver a series of workshops across two days exploring the concept of Smart locations and how they can be engines of economic recovery by creating new business opportunities, advancing sustainable development and boosting the NW Region both digitally and socially.
Smart locations are towns, cities, villages and communities that are exploiting data, next generation connectivity and emerging technology such as The Internet of Things (IoT) to become more responsive, engaging and capable of producing scalable solutions to address local challenges and improve the manner in which we manage resources, data and infrastructure.
The key drivers for the Smart locations include the increasing constraints on resources such as energy, health, transportation and environment, fuelled by recovery from Covid 19, the cost of living crisis, climate change and our desire to provide attractive, enjoyable places to live, work and visit.

Aim
The aim of this workshop is to present an overview of Derry City and Strabane District Council and Donegal County Councils ambitions to become Smart locations, it will explore concepts such as:
• Open Data: dynamic monitoring of the place, helping to predict issues before they occur and optimising the delivery of resources or services to match demand.
• Next Generation Connectivity: is enabling the extension of digital technology into more and more aspects of the real world. The tools for this are technological developments like advanced Wi-Fi, 5G and Low Powered Wide Area Networks (LPWAN).
• Internet of Things (IoT): An IoT ecosystem consists of web-enabled smart devices that use embedded systems, such as processors, sensors and communication hardware, to collect, send and act on data they acquire from their environments. The IoT has the potential to fundamentally shift the way humans interact with the world around them.
The overarching aim of the sessions are to feed information into the Smart Digital projects in Derry and Strabane’s City Deal and Donegal’s Digital Action Plan.

Natalija Counet, Founder and Skills for the Future Expert, City of Amsterdam.
Natalija works with companies, knowledge institutions and policy makers on the development of initiatives and collaborations in the field of the labour market and education. Her latest initiative TOMAS provides a comprehensive overview of the lifelong learning ecosystem in the region, allows organisations to match their upskilling and reskilling needs and work together on the ambitions and plans of the region.
